Defending Health Care in 2017:  What’s at Stake for West Virginia

Hundreds of thousands of West Virginians stand to lose health coverage.  With a new president and Congress, the health care gains made throughout the last six years face their greatest threat yet.  Congress has voted more than 60 times to roll back the historic progress that has been made to expand health coverage to millions of people in this country and to improve coverage for those who already had it.  These proposed changes will put the health — and lives — of countless West Virginians at risk.

Here’s what West Virginia stands to lose if the new president and Congress move forward to upend our health care system

Enrollment

The Affordable Care Act put in place comprehensive health insurance reforms that have improved access, affordability, and quality in health care for Americans. West Virginia is benefitting from the law because it has increased the number of West Virginians who are taking advantage of the expanded access to health care coverage.

Coverage to Care

Acquiring health care coverage is only the first step. The next step is finding a health care provider that will offer preventative care for the long term. Statistics show that preventative health care improves overall health, reduces the likelihood of chronic health problems, and leads to a longer life span. Coverage to Care is a resource specific to West Virginia that helps newly covered individuals find resources for locating and identifying health care professionals and preventative health care providers.
